FIREGROUND CHANNELS
After being dispatched to a job through the Network by ESTA / VicFire, when on scene and a control point has been established, a Fireground channel is nominated. This Fireground channel allows the on-scene appliances to communicate with each other, without 'clogging up' the dispatch channel. This channel is selected from the District Default Communications Plan, and is usually a digital, simplex, conventional channel. That is, it is not trunked (or repeated), therefore it is line of sight transmission only. Hence, you will only be able to monitor the fireground channel if you are on-scene or generally within about 30km (terrain dependant). If the incident has escalated to a sufficient size, with enough appliances on scene that it is necessary for a more complicated communication plan, a Forward Command Vehicle (FCV) is often dispatched. The FCV has two mobile radios, and often one or more portable radios. This facilitates one radio that is set to monitor the dispatch channel, enabling ESTA operators to communicate and pass messages to appliances, alert to changed conditions, or take messages. While the second radio monitors the fireground channel, enabling the FCV to act as a 'go-between'; on scene appliances & ESTA can use the FCV to relay messages through to any particular appliance, maintaining a continuous chain of communication. Without which, individual appliances would have to switch back and forth between dispatch and fireground channels, potentially missing messages, complicating operations and even putting lives at risk.
